AGENCY DISCOURSE MEMO

Subject: Bullying
Dear 1311 classmates,
Bullying is no new social topic in our day and age; it is something that has been around for ages. You would think after all the tragedies that have occurred all around the states something would have already been done about it. Children and even plenty of adults are getting bullied in environments where they should feel safe such as school or work and even in their own home through technology, which is known as cyber bullying. Looking at the statistics of the rise in bullying and cyber bullying from 2011-2012 is absolutely heartbreaking.
By definition bullying is an “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance”. Stopbullying.org is not only a website to raise awareness about a horrendous social topic infiltrating our communities but it also gives you advice and different resources where you can find help and put a stop to your bullying. Whether you are a concerned parent seeking guidance or a child who doesn’t know how to take care of your issue or don’t know who to go to, this site has different help lines and information for your specific problem.
Some people have greater chances of getting bullied than others. There are different risk factors that make your chances a lot stronger than others. Children who are at a higher risk are most likely either overweight or underweight, aren’t the most attractive or popular student, and don’t really fit in with the crowd. Of course there are those people with disabilities who also get bullied for being “different” by weak minded people. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or anything of that sort are also at higher risk of bullied because of their own personal choices.
As well as information on people getting bullied, this site has info on the bullies themselves and giving ideas as to why they might be the way they are. Most bullies are said to have low self-esteem, depressed, popular, and easily influenced by their peers. Along with those characteristics bullies more than likely don’t have a great relationship with their parents and have issues at home, which leads them to seek attention and act out at school. Bullies are usually aggressive and easily frustrated; they have difficulty following rules and unfortunately view violence in a positive way. They feel the urge to be in charge of others and dominate whatever environment they are surrounded by.
Stopbullying.org provides tons of resources so you don’t have to stay a victim of bullying. They give schools guidelines to help build and maintain safe environments using different tactics put together by professionals. There are also varied activities you can do when you realize there may be bullying going on. Also evidence based programs you or your child may join to stop or prevent bullying from ever happening. Most important stopbullying.org provides staff training on bullying prevention so we can do something before it starts and keep our community a bully free zone.
Sincerely, Sunny Vela
