Visual Analysis of Stop-Bullying
All visuals we encounter are created with specific purpose. They are either created to advertise, to inform you of issues, entertain you, etc.. The photographers’, Jimmy Ngyuen, purpose of the visual I have selected, Stop-Bullying, was to raise awareness of an ongoing issue occurring across our country. Using ethos pathos and logos, evaluating the authors direct intentions of the photo will definitely be easier to determine.
Purpose of the photo and its message
With one glance at the photo, Stop-Bullying, the message is given plain out in text and with an illustrative photo. The message of the photograph is to raise awareness of a reoccurring issue that has yet to be given enough attention, if any. With the illustration of the visual it is shown that people get bullied for the way they look, act, and everything in between. The simplicity of the photo and its included text has so much meaning behind it. The way Jimmy conveyed the message in the photo was to directly get the point across and still have a powerful impact on its viewer.
Intended Audience
The audience of this photo can range anywhere between toddlers to elderly people. Sadly, bullying discriminates against nobody. Bullies come in all shape and sizes, as well as the people getting bullied. Although bullying is more commonly seen in adolescence, from the photo you can establish it happens in all ages. Despite the fact that the photograph only includes women, you can infer that bullying also includes men. There for the intended audience of the photograph includes men and women of all ages, races, and cultures. Not only is the intended audience the people getting bullied, but also the bullies. Ngyuen wants the bullies to see this and realize they are in the wrong, and stop.
Ethos
Analyzing the photo its credibility is valid. Not in the sense that there is a website for the photo or anything of that sort, but the way the photograph was taken with the varying women and words used to describe why they are bullied written all over their nearly bare bodies. The message “STOP BULLYING” written boldly in red, it being the only piece of the photo in color gives the photo that much more credibility.
Pathos
Virtually the photograph is indicated to make you feel like you want to help stop bullying. Of course every viewer might have a different opinion as to how the visual made them feel, a person who is getting bullied might feel sad and also reassured because there are people out there trying to make a difference. A viewer might also feel angry at first sight to know that bullying is still a substantial issue people are still undergoing. Hopefully the emotions of a bully observing the visual might be regretful or feel sorrow for putting people who have been victimized by them. There are plenty of emotions that could be evoked from the viewer. It mostly depends on your standpoint and view of bullying, whether you are getting bullied, the parent of the child being bullied, a bystander, or the bully himself as to how you will react or convey to the visual.
Logos
I would say the visual Stop-Bullying was put together with plenty of logic behind it. They put women of different sizes and weights in the exact same clothing, while physically writing the issues as to why they are being bullied all over their bodies. They highlight the message of the visual so that it is clearly seen without any vague or hidden messages. The way Jimmy Nygen put this piece together arguing against it should be nearly impossible because it is merely to raise awareness not to cause controversy nor provide a solution to a problem.
Summary
After analyzing the visual and defining its ethos pathos and logos we have determined the photos high credibility, the logic behind it and we have evaluated its message. The photographer accomplished portraying every aspect of the visual. Jimmy provided a strong photo that induced emotion from varying viewers. The photographer also included text that directly announced the message, “Stop Bullying” and made it the only piece of the photo in color while the rest of it was in black and white. He also included words that may be the cause of bullying creating sympathy or empathy a viewer might have felt. He gave the photo enough credibility so that whoever viewed the image could see bullying was and still is a serious problem.
